"Academic writing involves critical and analytical thinking about the topic or issue, and demonstrating your ability to integrate ideas and information."

About Proof This

Proof This provides a highest quality proof reading and editing service for students of the health sciences. Both students who are native English speakers and those for whom English is an additional language benefit from having documents proof read prior to submission. Proof This specialises in proofreading and editing PhD, Masters and honours research theses for research students in clinical sciences and allied health (e.g. psychology, nursing etc), public health, and behavioural sciences. We can also help construct and/or review poster presentations & slide presentations (in PowerPoint) as well as CV's and scholarship applications.

Proofreading means to read and mark corrections in a document. It is an essential final step to academic writing and one that is often best done by someone independent of the work - a fresh set of eyes. It can also be used to make sure you have eliminated any errors of logic or reasoning in your work.

Academics who examine research theses and University tutors marking assignments expect written work to be of a high standard. In terms of presentation, this means the work should be presented in accordance with common standards for style, largely free of surface errors such as spelling or punctuation mistakes, and have an appropriately formatted reference list at the end. Careless errors put examiners off, they distract from the ideas you are presenting and will lower your grade.

Having your documents proofread by someone independent can address these problems. Sometimes, minor adjustments or changes to expression can greatly improve the flow of your argument, or make your ideas clearer. A fresh set of eyes can often identify spelling mistakes and awkward grammar you may have missed (or learnt to live with), and provides an opportunity to identify any breakdown in logic in your argument.

Proof This provides proofreading and editing for:

  • PhD and Masters by research thesis
  • Honours thesis/disertation
  • Posters and PowerPoint presentations

All of the work undertaken by Proof This complies with CASE Editing Standards (link to attachment) and should be appropriately acknowledged in the thesis or document.

What to expect

Quite simply, the highest standard of excellence in science editing. Every document is given a thoughtful edit for style and presentation, in addition to revisions for correct use of English. This is to ensure your document is not only correctly written but also that it reads clearly and eloquently.

Upon submitting your document you will be contacted within 24 hours regarding the receipt of your paper. A careful reading of your document and a close study of your writing style will occur, then your document will be carefully read and revised, and re-read and re-revised.

Two focused passes of your document will be made checking for clarity and readability in addition to correcting English grammar and syntax. Specifically your document will be reviewed for:

  • Logic and coherence
  • Style and expression
  • Spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Referencing style

Your documents will be returned to you as an email attachment with all suggested changes tracked. You may elect to accept or reject each editing suggestion individually in your edited documents. Additional comments or questions will be inserted as margin comments. In particular, suggestions to fix organisation problems or missing content will be provided as comments. If certain sections are unclear or arguments are illogical or unconvincing these will be noted.

It is a requirement of research degrees that the research be at the forefront of knowledge and as such many students are concerned about the confidentiality of their findings and the preservation of their intellectual property. This is recognised by us and confidentiality is a high priority for Proof This. We guarantee 100% confidentiality. Your data and ideas are never shared with anyone. Your document will be stored securely for a period of 6 weeks only after it is returned to you and then the file deleted.
